Sydney has lost an esteemed member of its Hellenic community with the passing of Michael Tsilimos, an active member who dedicated roughly three decades of service towards the Greeks of the city.

Tsilimos passed away on Sunday afternoon aged 72, leaving behind a great legacy encompassing years of contributions to Sydney’s Hellenes primarily through his work with the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW.

He had been a regular on the GOC of NSW’s Board, serving continuously since 1995 in various roles including Vice President and Secretary (the position he occupied up until his death).

Tsilimos was also a former Chair of the Greek Festival of Sydney, one of the biggest initiatives the GOC of NSW is known for, wherein he further contributed to the promotion of cultural affairs.

He migrated to Australia from the island of Chios in 1970 and worked in the Port of Sydney as a painter before acquiring his own company.

Tsilimos was also a staunch advocate for migrant and working class rights in the workplace, fighting hard to alleviate the daily problems of migrant communities.

The GOC of NSW extended their sincerest condolences to Tsilimos’ family for their loss, praising him for his many years of dedication on the Board.

“He will always be remembered with respect and appreciation. May the ground that covers him be light. Safe journey, eternal memory,” the Community said in their statement.

Tsilimos is survived by his wife Soula, his two children, Stelios and Stavros and their wives Maria and Casey, and his three grandchildren Chrysa, Chloe and Michaela.
