‘Pure Scum’, a new independent feature film made in Melbourne and starring up-and coming Greek Australian actor Nikita Chronis, is set to debut as a part of the 2025 Fantastic Film Festival Australia.

The gritty thriller follows two private schoolboys as they escape into the CBD after a drug-fuelled car crash, the film stars Chronis (‘Time Bandits’, Apple TV) alongside fellow young Melbourne actor Will Hutchens (‘Single, Out’, Here TV).

Speaking to Neos Kosmos last year, Chronis described the film as a fast paced, graphic, action packed, crazy film.

“I’m very excited. It’s been one of the most challenging and rewarding roles I’ve ever taken on,” Chronis said in a media release sent to Neos Kosmos upon hearing the news last week.

“We were lucky to have a relatively long rehearsal period before shooting began in which I was able to really dive into the part and spend a lot of time working with Will on our characters’ relationship and interplay.

“Gideon [writer/director Gideon Aroni] encouraged us to build an authentic connection through rehearsal and improvisation. He really gave us a lot of space. A fair chunk of our lines in the final cut are actually partially improvised and the film is richer for it in my opinion”.

Aroni, who also grew up in inner Melbourne said he aimed to capture it’s likeness on screen.

“I’m continuously astounded by how little our city has been depicted on our screens. It’s such a cinematic place. And with a cast and crew who all grew up here, have lived their whole lives here, we think it brings such an honesty and authenticity to the film,” he said.

“We’re incredibly excited to be playing here in Melbourne. It’s such a Melbourne film, I don’t think it’d feel right for it to premiere anywhere else. We’re just really looking forward to finally being able to share it with everyone after all these months and years of work.”

Chronis, Hutchins and Aroni will be present alongside other members of the cast and crew at the premiere, a special Q&A screening at Lido Cinemas in Hawthorn this week on May 1.

Additional screenings will be held at Lido on May 13 and at Ritz Cinemas in Sydney on May 8 and 13.

Tickets are available to purchase through the Fantastic Film Festival Australia website.
