Gyros has been ranked the number one best wrap worldwide.
Online food travel guide TasteAtlas has rated the Greek street food number one in their top 20 best wraps October ranking with a 4.5-star rating.
While Gyros is listed number one on the social media post, the TasteAtlas website has it at number two behind Lebanon’s Shawarma.
Gyros is one of Greece’s most beloved street foods — a savoury dish made from slices of seasoned meat, traditionally pork or chicken in Greece (and often lamb or veal elsewhere), cooked on a vertical rotating spit.
The tender meat is shaved into thin pieces and served in warm pita bread, typically with tzatziki, sometimes chips and fresh vegetables like tomato, onion, lettuce, and cucumber (depending where you get it).
The word gyros comes from the Greek gheereezo, meaning “to turn,” a nod to the constantly rotating spit.
Some trace its origins back to the time of Alexander the Great, when soldiers were said to have roasted meat on their swords over open fires.
Another theory points to the early 20th century, when Greek refugees from Constantinople and Smyrna brought the dish with them in 1922.
Many opened small food shops where gyros became a local favourite.
Following World War II, gyros spread far beyond Greece’s borders — taking hold across Europe, Australia, and the United States — and today it remains one of the world’s most popular and recognisable street foods.
