The tenth anniversary of the Penny Marathon, a worldwide event that aims to raise awareness and support animal welfare groups, is set to take place on 11 July. As was the case last year, the organisers are calling on participants to run their own solo events because of COVID-19 restrictions.

“The 10th Penny Marathon will not take place as a series of group events around the world on Sunday, 11 July. As was the case in 2020, this year we ask all of you to undertake a solo event in your city and feedback your photos and videos to us,” the event organisers said in a statement.

“You can choose to run, cycle, skate, swim or participate in any fitness activity you like in your own city on whatever time you like. And, yes, you can participate with a few friends and your dog.”

The Penny Marathon which is a registered international charity in Australia and Greece was started by four people in 2012 and has grown each year to include hundreds of participants around the world.

Proceeds raised from the marathon are used to raise awareness and support people and groups working to protect animals.

“The money we raise through donations and sales is primarily used for various stages of the rescue–rehome process, such as medical emergencies, boarding, food and bedding, spay and neutering, vaccinations, travel and other essential costs,” said the organisers.

The Penny Marathon is organized and run by volunteers.
