It had been a frustratingly ‘stop-start’ tournament at Wimbledon this year, with games being suspended for a multitude of reasons.

Nick Kyrgios came back for the final sets of his first round match against Frenchman Ugo Humbert, beating him 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-1 9-7.

The match had been stopped at 3-all in the fifth set on Tuesday evening due to local rules that prevent play past 11:00pm.

It was the Australian’s first match since the Australian Open in February and he did not disappoint, breaking for an 8-7 lead, before saving two break points in the final game and securing his victory with a service winner.

In a post match on-court interview Kyrgios cheekily described his performance as “not too bad for a part-time player”.

“Look, a lot of people were telling me, ‘There’s no chance. There’s no point in you going with that short preparation’. I was hearing a load of things. (Someone was) telling me, ‘There’s no chance you can come off the couch and compete at this level’,” he said.

There’s been a lot of talk about the quality of the courts this year, with concerns that the grounds are far too slippery for players. Winner of 23 Grand Slams, Serena Williams had to walk out of her own first round match after suffering an injury after slipping on court.

Kyrgios was also at risk of a walk out when he too suffered an awkward fall during the fifth set that caused him to cry out in pain.

“I’m a very interesting person to ask about movement,” Kyrgios said in his post-match press conference.

“I definitely think being Australian growing up on the grass helps. I played a lot of grass court matches when I was a junior … I developed my grass court game early…Going down, it was pretty brutal. It hurt, my hip hurt. But I got back up and showed some resilience, coming with age.”

Kyrgios is set to play against world No.77 Italian Gianluca Mager.

After Rogers resumed from her bathroom break, both players were asked if they wanted to suspend the match.

The game resumes tomorrow as Roger leads 7-5.
