As the heatwave melted most of Melbourne last week, Greek Australians were running to grab their frappé fixes and literally left cafés out of coffee.
At Melissa Cakes Café in Templestowe, barista Nick Katsakis told Neos Kosmos he ran out of Nescafe twice over the four day heatwave, and served more than 1000 frappes to sweating customers.
He says the average order for frappés is about 100-150.
Kalamaki Street Food in the city served so many overheated office workers it also ran out of Nescafe, and on Monday owner Manny Gerassimou was on a mission to stock up before the rush again.
The No Name restaurant in Oakleigh says their business picked up at night, with over 330 frappés being served to customers waiting for a cool evening change.
At Vanilla at Eaton Mall, staff lost count of the number of cold coffee orders that were being processed, and both night and day showed no difference in numbers.
Waitress Jess tells Neos Kosmos the kitchen was going through 12 cans of 500g Nescafe a day to keep up with demand.
Despite the difficult working conditions, you would expect many café owners will be praying for another bout of hot weather to keep the orders coming.
Nescafe suppliers must be laughing.
