Few things mark summertime in Melbourne better than the Coburg Night Market.
Established in 2010 by the Queen Victoria Market, the Coburg Night Market has been proudly presented by Moreland City Council since 2014.
Now in its seventh season, the hugely successful event brought together dozens of families that spent a leisurely Friday night at the beautiful Bridges Reserve, enjoying lively music, delicious food and great craftsmanship. Some of the city’s finest artisans make sure to book stalls at the event and this year was no exception.
Local acts, from the quirky Uptown Brown One Man Band (very popular with the children) to Con Calamaras’ beloved Rebetiko Ensemble, entertained visitors, but the real attraction has been, as always, the wonderful display of street food from around the world.
The market includes more than 85 stalls and food vendors this year. Prominent among the stalls that proved to be very popular with foodies were those of The Cypriot Kitchen, bringing succulent seftalies and haloumi pies to the public, and St. Gerry’s Delicious Desserts with their unbeatable loukoumades.
Meanwhile, if you feel nostalgic for 1950s harmonies, Melbourne’s gaggle of vintage singers, Bobby and the Pins, bring their pin-up style look and 1950s hits to Coburg, moving through the crowd and entertaining all in their path. The powerful sounds of Italian women’s choir La Dolle Della Luna, and New Orleans-inspired jazz outfit the Sugarfoot Ramblers, will also hit the stage on Saturday tonight.
Anyone wishing to get a taste, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and the pre-Christmas vibe, should head to the Bridges Reserve on Friday 16 December, where the last night of the event will take place from 5.30 pm.
