Husband and wife team Thomas Deliopoulos and Sylvia Gabriel seem to have a real knack for knowing what people want.

In January the owners of the popular souvlaki joint in Oakleigh, Kalimera Souvlaki Art opened Mykonos Taverna just down the road and are already seeing great success. But it’s not just the locals who have caught on.

The tavern, inspired by the Cycladic island, has been named by the Australian Good Food & Travel Guide (AGFG) as one of the top eight Greek restaurants across the country that are a ‘must try’; a particularly significant achievement when you note that the honour is doubled, with their other business Kalimera, known nationwide for their gyro done the ‘Greek way’ with pork, also featured in the top eight.

“Save yourself the airfare and head to Portman Street in Oakleigh to discover a little slice of the Greek Islands at Mykonos Taverna,” the AGFG said.
“Take a seat in the alfresco dining area and be convinced you are shoreside by the Mediterranean Sea overlooking a life-sized mural adorned with soft, whimsical fabrics, rope lanterns, stone flooring, and relaxed deck-style seating, transporting diners to a location beyond.”

The menu deserves as much attention, if not more, than the beautiful interior.

Delicious meze options include fava, chargrilled octopus and garides saganaki – prawns beautifully cooked in garlic, tomato, peppers, and served with feta cheese. For mains try the kontosouvli of the day, hylopites me myzithra – traditional dried flat egg pasta with mizythra cheese, cherry tomatoes and mushrooms – or the kotsi hirino, oven-roasted pork knuckle with mashed potato. There’s also a number of vegetarian and vegan options available, desserts to enjoy over a coffee, and even a section of the menu devoted to an assortment of dishes perfectly paired with tsipouro.

And if that wasn’t enough to make you feel like you’re back on the islands, live Greek music takes the kefi to the next level on Tuesday nights and Sunday afternoons.

Mykonos Taverna is located at 58 Portman Street, Oakleigh, VIC. Opening hours: Tuesday-Thursday: 5.00 pm till late / Friday – Sunday 12 noon till late. Live music Tuesdays from 7.00 pm and Sundays from 3.00 pm.
