A 100 per cent Australian-owned family business of Greek heritage, Procal manufactures fresh milk and dairy products, sourced from local dairy farms, in a state-of-the-art facility in Melbourne.

Its milk and yoghurt products have received gold and silver at the Dairy Industry Association of Australia (DIAA) 2018 Australian Dairy Product Competition; that makes it three years in a row.

The multi-awarded independent dairy manufacturing and distribution company is owned by the Thyssen family, who started the business over five decades ago.

“The Thyssens entered the Australian business field initially promoting their Patra orange juice,” Eve Vafiadis, Procal’s national sales and marketing manager told Neos Kosmos.

They then founded the successful Original Juice Company, and after selling it to Golden Circle in 2002, turned their talents to the dairy industry and formed Procal Dairies in 2003.”

After the deregulation of the dairy industry, CEO Adam Thyssen, together with his father Nick, secured a deal with dairy giant Murray Goulburn to contract pack Procal branded milk.

Growth came quickly. To keep up with demand, a 4,000 square metre actory was built in Campbellfield, in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

When commissioned in 2008, the new facility represented the most advanced fresh dairy processing plant in Australia. With an annual processing capacity of approximately 120 million litres, the plant incorporates some of the most modern techniques available, minimising usage of resources such as water, gas and electricity while enabling a fully integrated recycling system to be implemented.

The site incorporates a large refrigerated storage and distribution centre which is complimented by a second operation in Sydney.

Procal’s award-winning products are permeate-free. “The Thyssens are fixated on quality,” said Ms Vafiadis. “They take great pride in their final product. The most popular product, Procal Authentic Greek Yoghurt, has been created based on a traditional family recipe,” she explained. “It is reminiscent of the Greek yoghurt in the Mediterranean. Our master yoghurt makers do not add sugar, colours or preservatives.”

Procal Smooth Yoghurt is is 97 per cent fat-free and available in a variety of sizes including ready to eat and bulk commercial packs.
