Elisabet (Georgiakakis) Stavrianouthakis died on 16 July, aged 102 years of age.

The legendary woman of Crete carried with her the tragedy of war. Her father, Vardis Georgakakis, from the village of Koustogerako had saved the life of Australian Frank Ezzy in WWII.

Ezzy’s family was forever grateful to Vardis, and his daughter Ruth Riordan and granddaughter sought out his daughter Elisabet.

With Elisabet’s passing, Ms Riordan posted a message on Facebook.

Over 6,500 Australians and 7,750 New Zealanders, along with British, Greek and other Allied troops, came to Crete in May 1941 to defend the island against the expected German invasion after the fall of Greece in April.
