Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the US Open is being played without fans and runs from 31 August through 13 September at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. The lack of fans, however, does not take away from excitement especially for Greek fans.

Following her dramatic takeover on the legendary Serena Williams in the third round of the Western & Southern Open, Maria Sakkari broke through American teenager Amanda Anisimova’s offence and defence with 6-3, 6-1, advancing to the Round of 16 best. In a contest that began with the opponents dominating their serve through the four games, Sakkari ended up dominant on the return, as well, winning a staggering 55 per cent of her return points.

Anisimova, however, was trying to dictate both wings while Sakkari focused on her movement forcing the American teen to hit the ball from positions that were awkward for her timing.

Sakkari will next face the winner of the much anticipated match between Sloane Stephens and Serena Williams.

“It’s going to be a tough match no matter who wins,” said Sakkari. “But playing Serena [recently] gives me more of an idea of how she plays.”

Stephens and Sakkari have never played while Sakkari has the 1-0 advantage over Williams.
