With the semi-finals of the Greek Community Cup just around the corner, scheduled for Saturday February 4 at Mill Park FC, fans are on the edge of their seats following another fantastic day of football last Sunday.
The competition has been a boon for Melbourne’s Greek football community, building on the Hellenic excellence displayed late last year at the All Nations Cup, where Team Greece triumphed and won the tournament for the first time ever.
President of Mill Park FC, Jim Christou, was full of praise following Sunday’s matches, touting the Greek Community Cup as just what was needed to kindle support for local tourneys.
“What a fantastic turnout, I’d like to thank everyone who came and made it an incredibly special day,” he said.
“Seeing old faces come together after too long apart was very special, it created a fantastic carnival atmosphere, something which has been missing from our community for quite a while now.
Mill Park has progressed to the Cup semi-finals owing to Sunday’s two-nil result against Box Hill, where they’ll go up against East Kew at 1pm this coming Saturday.

“The fact that our team has also reached the semi-finals stage of the tournament is an added bonus for our organisation,” he noted.
East Kew Olympiacos Coach, Dennis Angouras, was ecstatic after their quarter-final win against West Preston.
“It’s very exciting for our club to reach the semi-finals of the Greek Cup, we feel very privileged to be in the last four of the tournament,” he said.
“We never imagined we’d be in this position at the start of the competition and can’t wait for this coming Saturday.”
He’s encouraging all comers to head down and show their support for the remaining four teams as they battle it out for the chance to take part in the Final showdown slated for Saturday 11 February.
“Congratulations to the GCM and Mill Park FC for putting on this wonderful event for our community,” he added
And he’s put out a special call to Olympiacos supporters, asking they rock up to Saturday’s semis sporting their red and white and give the team that extra drive to bring home the match.
Kingston City FC President, Sam Koulos, saluted the GCM for organising “such a wonderful event”, one that “reminds me of the old days when all Greek Clubs used to look forward to participating in the Hellenic Cup.”
“Well done also to Mill Park for Hosting the tournament and creating a magnificent spectacle for all of us to enjoy and get together,” he said.

Kingston City was delivered to the semis on the back of a stunning 4-0 victory against the Oakleigh Cannons last weekend.
They’ll now take on South Melbourne in the second match of Saturday’s semi-finals at Partridge Street Reserve, Lalor.
South Melbourne’s Senior Football Director, Andrew Mesourouni said his team “is delighted to have advanced to the semi-finals of the Greek Cup, we’re looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
Fittingly, he explained “It’d be amazing if we can become the first to win the Inaugural Greek Community Cup, I encourage all our fans to come and support the team this coming Saturday at Mill Park.”
The thrilling penultimate game-day of the Greek Community Cup is fast approaching, come the evening of Saturday 4 February it’ll be revealed which two sides will have their shot at glory…
When they’ll take to the field for the final time in the competition’s conclusion on February 11, as they attempt to be come the first ever team to hoist the GCM Cup in victory.
