*Note: This dish is from Larissa, it is slow cooked for many hours but once it’s in the oven there is nothing to do except wait. The dish is at its best if cooked in an ovenproof ceramic dish if possible. If not, use what you have.
Ingredients:
1 kilo of beef (the saddle part) cut into large cubes
5 tablespoons of olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 large onions cut into cubes
4 – 6 cloves of garlic
6 large green peppers cut into large pieces
1 and 1/2 cup of peeled tinned tomatoes
1/4 cup of butter
1/2 kilo of feta or kafelotiri cut into cubes
Method:
1. Heat oven to 165 °C
2. Oil a large oven proof ceramic dish and spread the meat in it
3. Add salt and pepper and 2 tablespoons of oil and toss (mix with your hands)
4. Place the onions and garlic on top of the meat, then the peppers and tomatoes
5. Add salt and pepper on each layer and a little olive oil
6. Cut the butter into small pieces and spread on top
7. Cover with aluminium foil and cook for 3 hours
8. Approximately every 1/2 hour knock the top with a spatula (this is to let the steam out)
9. About 15 minutes before the 3 hours are over, test the meat to make sure it is falling apart
10. Put the cheese cubes on top now and push a few pieces in deeper with a fork. Cook for the last 15 minutes
11. Remove from the oven, allow to cool slightly and serve
