Susie Dee, one of Australia’s leading theatre creatives, has been in Crete for two months.

“In Crete, I stayed in the heart of the old town in Chania,” Dee told Neos Kosmos.

“I adored Chania”, she added.

Dee has worked as a performer, devisor and director in Australia and overseas for the past thirty-three years.

The former artistic director of Melbourne Workers Theatre (MWT) and Institute of Complex Entertainment (ICE) has won many awards and received accolades for her ground-breaking work. She has been rejuvenating her creative psyche in ancient Crete.

The beauty of Crete and its people has seeped into Dee’s psyche.

“I love Crete, she said, the liveliness, the harbour, the plethora of beaches close by and the amazing architecture, that mix of the Greek, Venetian and Ottoman,” Dee told Neos Kosmos.

Dee received the Australia Council residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (for female director). She has directed theatrical works for Melbourne Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, and various independent theatre companies. She has been nominated for and won numerous awards.

Dee has received five Green Room Awards, including Best Director. She has also received a nomination for Best Director at the Helpmann Awards.

“l love the Cretan people. They are so generous, open and friendly”, Dee said.

She mentions “Cretan cuisine, especially the rabbit stifado”.
