Despina Papadopoulou, a much loved member of our community known for her unwavering stamina, vivacity, and an enduring love for dance, has passed away at the age of 103.
Despina lived a full and long life and came to be adored by many, leaving behind a great legacy that will remain in people’s memory for many years to come.
Her journey began all the way back to 10 January 1922 when she was born in Alexandria to parents with roots from Lemnos, Smyrna, Patmos and Leros, with the family maintaining its Greek heritage while living in Egypt.
In 1962, Despina’s family made the journey to move to Greece where they stayed for two years before deciding to travel to Australia.
They boarded the famous ship ‘Patris’ and settled in Melbourne, engaging with the Greek community and coming to know the city as their home.
Despina and her family went through hardships after they lost her husband, with her stepping up and displaying great strength to continue raising their youngest children.

She persevered and helped raise the family which began with herself, her husband and five children and grew to encompass eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In a feature published last year, Despina’s daughter Mary spoke fondly to Neos Kosmos about her mother (whom she had decided to move into her own home), noting her joy when seeing her great-grandchildren.
“They come often to visit and mum enjoys these visits so much. It’s a joy for her to see the little ones running around. And especially when the four-year-old dances… oh, she gets her real happiness. You know, you can see it on her face,” Mary said.
She highlighted her mother has had a profound impact on her life.
“The best lesson I got from my mother is to have patience,” Mary said.
“She would always tell me, ‘in life, in whatever you do, don’t stress because stressing doesn’t help the situation, and just lead a quiet life.’ That’s what she’s always taught me. You know, in life. And that’s very true of how she lived her life.”

The closing words in the feature perfectly described the significance of Despina’s life:
“Despina’s legacy transcends time, weaving together the threads of Greek heritage, multicultural experiences, and the joy found in the simple pleasures of family, dance, and the enduring embrace of a loving community.
As she continues to cherish each moment, Despina Papadopoulou remains a beacon of resilience, imparting valuable lessons on patience, fortitude, and the beauty of leading a quiet, meaningful life.
Her story resonates as a source of inspiration for generations to come, reminding us of the richness found in a life well-lived.”
