The 68th Venice Film Festival came to a close last Saturday with the announcement of the winners of its coveted awards. The gong for Best Screenplay went to Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou for Greece’s low-budget tragedy Alps.

The film’s dark storyline revolves around a company, Alps, that provides a service for relatives of the recently deceased. The company is approached by families to stand in for the lost loved ones, replicating scenes out of their life together, and even the deceased person’s mannerisms and expressions.

Aggeliki Papoulia plays the role of a nurse working for Alps. She also starred in Dogtooth, another of Lanthimos’ films. Dogtooth was the winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009, and nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Venice Film Festival is considered one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.
