Yes, it’s a thing, and National Baklava Day is fast shaping up to be a favourite day of the year for fans of the rich pastry dessert.

To celebrate the day, this Sunday 17 November, Blu Spoon in Port Melbourne will be hosting a special event, showcasing their delicious baklava, from traditional to Nutella, and salted caramel, as well as four limited edition flavours. For those feeling a little more adventurous, there will be Oreo baklava, pistachio, as well as sour cherry (yum!), and orange with hazelnut.

All baklava is homemade from scratch by co-owner, Conrad Manolidis’ mother, Soula.

“When it comes to the baklava, my mum’s the expert,” Conrad told Neos Kosmos. “She was only ever used to making the traditional one, and then it wasn’t until we started playing around with different ingredients that we realised you can put almost anything into baklava with the right consistency.”

The new limited edition flavours, which will be available on Sunday, are an extension of the elements already available to customers in store as condiments for their Greek frozen yoghurt, such as sour cherry and quince preserves.

Soula will be in store on Sunday, helping to serve up her delicious creations and will also be available to chat about her baklava techniques.

One of her latest creations is the Baklava Cheesecake, which Conrad can only describe as “really, really amazing”. Other unique offerings include their Greek-inspired Rocky Road, as well as Kourabiedes with Raffaello chocolate centres, all of which are available in store, and can also be added to a gift box.

Now in its fifth year, Blu Spoon is very much an intergenerational family business. Conrad and business partner Anna Provataris are proud to have maintained their original vision, offering only the best Greek yoghurt, and with condiments and sweets on offer all homemade by their mothers.

“That’s how we’ve managed to retain a lot of that original integrity, because it is a family effort; everyone chips in,” Conrad said. “You should see the look on people’s faces sometimes when they come into the store; it’s literally like Christmas, because there’s so many offers, people just go ‘I don’t know what to do!'”
