Our very own Olympic Champion Lefteris Petrounias is going for the Gold after getting through to the finals of the World Cup Gymnastics 2020 event that was held in Melbourne on Thursday night.

Petrounias wowed everyone after scoring an impressive 15.058 points in the ring apparatus leaving behind British gymnast Courtney Tulloh (14.700 points) and Iranian Ahmad Kohani Mahdi (14.633 points).

“First place at the pre-finals and going for the finals! I have wanted to write those lines for a while. Come on let’s go strong and I am going crazy,” wrote the 29-year-old on his Instagram page after his win.

Petrounias, who arrived in Australia last Saturday night, is considered the favourite to win the finals that will be held on Saturday night at the Melbourne Arena.

In his exclusive interview with Neos Kosmos the ‘Lord of the Rings’ who needs to win three World Cups this year in order to qualify for the Tokyo Summer Olympics (2020) had invited all Greek Australians to support him.

“It is so exciting to have my fellow Greeks my own brothers welcome me on the other side of the world. I would love to see many of you come support me during the event here in Melbourne. I hope I can make you all proud down under”, he had said.

After the World Cup Gymnastics 2020 event in Australia, Petrounias will compete in Baku (12-15/3) and Doha (18-21/3).
