Authorities ordered the shutting down of a popular beach bar on the island of Mykonos for 60 days after social distancing rules were flouted.

Ftelia, the famous resort, has been fined 20,000 euros after allowing patrons to linger at the bar counter.

Rules require that customers should quickly move away from bar areas after being served their drinks.

The infringement occurred on the first day after the restrictions were lifted, allowing beach bars to serve alcohol and play music for their customers. Hundreds of patrons flocked to the bar, taking advantage of the long weekend as Monday was a public holiday in Greece for Pentecost.

Similar incidents took place in other parts of Greece.

Greek Government Spokesman Stelios Petsas warned on Monday that a new lockdown may be imposed on areas where COVID-19 rules are flouted.

The easing of rules corresponds with a skyrocketing of coronavirus cases to 97 new infections in the last four days, and 52 cases confirmed in just 24 hours. The Greek Health Ministry states that 30 of the 97 cases were documented in Xanthi, north-eastern Greece. The increase comes as Greece prepares to open the borders to foreign tourists on 15 June.
