The rain and the bitter cold did not stop the Greeks from coming to meet the Premier of Victoria, John Brumby who announced increased funidng for the development of Eaton Mall in Oakleigh.

The Premier and Member for Oakleigh Ann Barker visited Eaton Mall last Saturday to announce $1 million for improvements through the Victorian Government’s $12 million Cultural Precincts and Community Infrastructure Fund.
“This funding will strengthen Oakleigh’s Greek identity and help encourage more visitors to experience and enjoy the rich cultural traditions of the area,” Mr Brumby said.
The funding is in addition to the $2 million promised for a Cultural Centre at the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne, Victoria and the $1.5 million in early 2009.
“Our Greek community in Victoria is one of the most established and plays an active role in contributing to our reputation as a diverse society that embraces our rich cultural heritage.”
Mr Brumby went around Eaton Mall and met shop keepers and shopers while highlighting his love for Greece and reminding them that he has travelled to Greece.
Mr Brumby said the funding would assist with the establishment of a public performance space for cultural performances, al fresco dining areas to further enhance the strong Mediterranean feel in Eaton Mall and provide greater civic and community space.
“The project will add to the multicultural cafes and food stalls already in the precinct,” Mr Brumby said.
The Premier highlighted how tproject is an example of how the government is working with community organisations and councils to preserve the state’s “multicultural heritage by developing or enhancing community infrastructure and cultural precincts.”
