Andrew Vourvahakis’s authentic Greek loukaniko has won the Champion Award for best sausage in the country at the inaugural Australian Charcuterie Excellence awards hosted by the Australian Meat Industry Council last week.

Described as the premier awards for the small goods industry in Australia, the competition recognizes quality and excellence, while also bolstering industry recognition and standards.

Their company Andrew’s Choice received 10 Gold awards, being the only entrant out of 350 to take home two champion titles.

“This is a very proud moment for the art of Greek charcuterie and Hellenic culture and cuisine,” says Vourvahakis.

Vourvahakis stressed the importance of the humble loukaniko’s widespread recognition saying he’d like to “share this reward with the entire Hellenic community, use it as an opportunity to catapult new education around the rich history and diversity of Hellenic cuisine.”

“We want them to learn how to say it, how to cook it, and how to enjoy it as much as they do more common European sausage varieties,” he said speaking of the Greek sausage’s newfound glory.

Andrew’s Choice have only introduced loukaniko to their range of products recently, and say it was done to honour their family’s history, and Greek heritage.
