Sydney-born virologist Sotiris Tsiodras, who became a household name when the pandemic first broke out in Greece, has been appointed to head a new interdisciplinary academic committee to advise Greece’s Health Ministry on public policy.

Greece’s Health Ministry announced the new Committee of Public Health Experts (EEDY) on Saturday. The committee will work as a separate entity to the current government advisory body but will track new academic studies on SARS-CoV-2 and research treatments for COVID-19. The new committee will also contribute to the creation of a holistic approach to health services and the care of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients in hospitals, and hence not be restricted to the pandemic.

The new committee will serve for a four-year term and those on its board will come from a variety of positions and will not be paid a fee to sit on the committee.
