New Australian Archbishop

Bishop Makarios of Christoupolis was unanimously voted in as the new Archbishop of Australia on 9 May, putting an end to weeks of speculation about the church leadership since the death of Archbishop Stylianos.

Serial killer 

The underwater search at the red lake to find the last two of the seven known victims of a Cyprus serial killer. Suspect Nicos Metaxas, an army officer, has already confessed to the murders but the police are performing wellness checks on the foreign women stored on the SIM card belonging to the alleged killer. There are fears that more victims may be found, especially after the suspect had tried to swallow the card during his arrest last month. Metaxas had at least three SIM cards, and only one was specifically used in his contacts with foreign women. The phone device he used has already been destroyed, and may have contained more evidence. An alleged rape victim said that Metaxas had recorded the crime using a mobile phone.

Hit-and-run accident

Police are searching for the driver of a red hatchback that killed Arthur Frangis, 78, when walking home after volunteering at his local soccer club canteen. He was hit by a car travelling east on Main Road East in St Albans, at the corner of Erica Avenue, at around 9pm on Wednesday. The driver did not stop, and police as well as the family of the deceased are pleading for the driver of the red hatchback to come forward. Mr Frangis was just metres from the Saint Albans home where he had lived for 54 years. He leaves behind his wife, Helen, and three children.

Legacy pays influencer

Legacy, a cafe in Camberwell, has been ordered to pay Instagram Influencer Chloe Roberts $1,600 after a verbal agreement between both parties went sour. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal compared Ms Roberts’ service to that of a billboard and ruled that she was entitled to be paid for posts that she later deleted, ‘prematurely’ according to the cafe. Legacy cafe advertises with social media posts created by influencers, and owner Con ‘Costa’ Katsogiannis approached Roberts to help him attract customers by using her image as a youthful influencer. The cafe was ordered to pay Ms Roberts $1,400 that is two-thirds the sum originally sought.

PAOK v AEK game without fans

The Greek Cup final between PAOK Thessaloniki and AEK Athens will be held at OAKA Stadium on Saturday. Unfortunately, it will be by special-invite only. Alternate Sports Minister George Vasiliadis reached the decision following consultations with the Greek Football Federation, police and the representatives of the two clubsSpectators, apart from the invited guests, will not be permitted entry due to fears of violence.

Australian Hellenic Choir

The Australian Hellenic Choir on Tuesday announced it is officially up and running. Founded by James Tsolakis, the Sydney-based choral group is multicultural and multilingual. It has been formed with the ambition to bring the world’s best music to Australian audiences. “Our vision is to support performers and events and to perform in our own right,” said Mr Tsolakis, who is President of the organisation. “With several performances already booked into the next 12 months, we are looking forward to presenting our unique world sound.” Auditions for the Australian Hellenic Choir have been scheduled for Sunday 19 May, 2019. There’s nothing better than living next door to a Greek yiayia and enjoying the benefits of her home-made cooking and care. Melbourne resident Daniel from Reservoir knows this too well, and has been documenting the bliss of living next door to a Greek yiayia Nina, who showers him with love and daily offers of homemade meals. His Instagram account, called yiayianextdoor has nearly 24K followers intrigued by the new ways in which this yiayia showers the young man with love from lentil soup handed over the red fence to a tsoungrisma of red Easter eggs. Daniel writes on his account that “everyone deserves a girl next door” before offering snippets of his life that make his followers jealous.
